Ultrasonography

At Wilvet, we have a state of the art ultrasound machine that is in use 24/7 to diagnose a variety of conditions. Ultrasonography (also called ultrasound) is a noninvasive, pain-free procedure that uses sound waves to examine a pet’s internal organs and other structures inside the body. In addition to Radiology (X-rays), ultrasound has quickly become the diagnostic modality of choice to evaluate an animal’s abdominal organs. It can also be used to detect fluid, cysts, tumors, or abscesses, to confirm pregnancy or monitor an ongoing pregnancy.

Ultrasound is often used in conjunction with x-rays. Interpretation of ultrasound images requires great skill on the part of the clinician.

To perform an abdominal ultrasound, the pet’s abdomen must be shaved and gel applied to the surface of the body. Hair clipping and gel allow the handheld transducer to slide more easily and create a more accurate visual image.

The transducer emits ultrasonic sound waves, which are directed into the body toward the structures to be examined. The waves create echoes of varying degrees depending on the density of the tissue and amount of fluid present. Those waves create detailed images of the structures, which are shown on a monitor and recorded for evaluation.

Ultrasound is not painful, does not involve radiation, and has no known side effects. Many pets do require mild sedation due to the length of time they have to sit still.
